- [161] New York Marble Cemetery Interments
1830-1937,
- with additional biographical information
gathered from descendants, family genealogies, newspapers and city directories by Anne
Wright Brown. Authorized by the NY Marble Cemetery, Inc. The cemetery, incorporated in
1831, is located at 2nd Ave above Second Street, and was the first non-sectarian cemetery
in New York City. It should not be confused with the New York City Marble Cemetery,
nearby but separate. Over two-third of the more than 2,000 persons buried in the
underground marble vaults have been identified with parents' and spouses' names, dates and
locations of birth and marriage, and brief notes on occupations. Most of the
well-to-do families represented were deeply involved in the dynamic political, mercantile,
and social life of NYC in the 1830's and 40's. The first printing has
handmade marbled endpapers. 7" x 8" hardcover, 248 pages, w/ illustrations, indexed
