HISTORIES

[158] EARLY HISTORY OF NEW CONCORD, NY 1760-1856 by Paul T. Veillette. This well documented history of an early Columbia county village presents evidence of the New England character of the early inhabitants. New Concord, located in the Town of Chatham, was founded in approximately 1760 by predominantly Connecticut settlers who brought with them their Congregationalist traditions. The community remained small. Even by 1860, French’s "Gazeteer of New York State" records only 109 inhabitants and one church. Written from the point of view of the people, using the resources of church records, cemetery records, and tax lists to establish relationships. Families discussed in great detail are: Beebe, Cady, Clark, Ingraham, Lovejoy, Palmer, Pratt, and Savage although hundreds of other surnames are included. Of special interest are the 26 pages of photographs of currently existing houses in this hamlet together with the history of their inhabitants.hardbound, 189 pages, 2 indexes          $ 39.95
